Lỗ kỷ lục vì thương vụ Nokia, Microsoft lại tái cấu trúc
Hôm 21/7 vừa qua, Microsoft đã công bố báo cáo tài chính Quý 4 năm tài khóa 2015 (kết thúc vào ngày 30/6/2015), theo đó công ty lỗ ròng 3,2 tỷ USD, một con số khó có thể hình dung so với mức lãi 4,6 tỷ USD của cùng kỳ năm ngoái. Đúng ra thì Micrososft lãi 4,6 tỷ USD trong quý vừa qua, nhưng phải nhận khoản lỗ kỷ lục vì công ty đã ghi giảm 7,6 tỷ USD giá trị của bộ phận thiết bị di động mua lại từ Nokia.
Với việc ghi giảm này, xem như Microsoft đã thừa nhận thất bại đối với mảng kinh doanh điện thoại Nokia mà công ty đã phải chi trả 9,5 tỷ USD để hoàn tất thương vụ vào tháng 4/2014. Thương vụ đình đám này được tiết lộ lần đầu vào tháng 9/2013, do cựu CEO Steve Ballmer khởi xướng trong nỗ lực tái cấu trúc công ty với chiến lược “thiết bị và dịch vụ”.
Microsoft còn phải tốn thêm khoảng 750 – 850 triệu USD cho chi phí cắt giảm 7.800 nhân sự, khi CEO Satya Nadella buộc phải làm cuộc đại phẫu thuật để giải quyết “khối u” do người tiền nhiệm để lại. Phần lớn nhân sự bị mất việc trong đợt này thuộc bộ phận phần cứng di động, chủ yếu là từ mảng kinh doanh smartphone. Năm ngoái, Microsoft cũng đã có đợt thanh lọc lớn chưa từng có, cắt giảm tới 18.000 việc làm, trong đó có tới một nửa trong số 25.000 nhân viên đến từ Nokia.
Ngoài khó khăn trong mảng di động, Microsoft còn đối mặt với thách thức lớn từ thị trường PC vẫn tiếp tục tuột dốc khiến nhu cầu về Windows đang giảm dần. Báo cáo Quý 2/2015 của IDC cho thấy, doanh số PC toàn cầu giảm 11,8% so với cùng kỳ năm trước. Đáng chú ý là tất cả các hãng lớn cung cấp PC chạy Windows đều bị tụt doanh số. Theo báo cáo quý vừa qua, doanh thu từ việc bán bản quyền HĐH Windows cho các nhà sản xuất máy tính OEM đã giảm 22%, còn bán cho khối doanh nghiệp thì giảm 21% so với cùng kỳ năm ngoái.
Đối ngược với tình hình ảm đạm của mảng Windows, doanh thu từ mảng dịch vụ đám mây, bao gồm Office 365 và Azure, đã tăng 96%. CEO Nadella vốn trước đây là người lãnh đạo mảng đám mây của Microsoft, kể từ khi nhậm chức CEO Microsoft ông luôn đặt ưu tiên cho di động và dịch vụ đám mây.
Windows Phone thất bại, Microsoft đặt cược vào Windows 10
Số liệu trong vòng một năm qua về tình hình người dùng smartphone và máy tính bảng của NetMarketShare cho thấy bức tranh Windows Phone hết sức ảm đạm: Android dẫn đầu chiếm tới 48% tổng số người dùng, tiếp theo là iOS với 42,3%, và Windows Phone chỉ chiếm tỷ trọng ít ỏi 2,3%.
Điều đáng ngại với Microsoft là Windows Phone chưa kịp lớn đã bị teo dần thị phần. Theo báo cáo số liệu thống kê nghiên cứu thị trường smartphone toàn cầu năm 2014 của IDC, thị phần Windows Phone chỉ còn 2,7% so với 3,3% của năm 2013. Đáng chú ý là Microsoft chiếm đến 95% toàn bộ số smartphone bán ra trong năm 2014. Và cho đến thời điểm này khó có ai giám tin là Samsung, HTC, hay LG sẽ trở lại với Windows Phone sau thời gian thử nghiệm và thất bại với nền tảng di động của Microsoft. Trước sự đào thoát của các hãng sản xuất, hầu như chỉ có phép lạ mới có thể thay đổi vận mệnh của Windows Phone.
Không thể cạnh tranh với iPhone và các mẫu điện thoại Android cao cấp, Microsoft đã có những điều chỉnh chiến lược, tập trung vào mảng smartphone giá rẻ. Kết quả là tình hình tiêu thụ Lumia đã khả quan hơn. Trong quý vừa qua, doanh số bán smartphone của Microsoft tăng 10% so với cùng kỳ của năm 2014, đạt 8,4 triệu chiếc. Nhưng vấn đề là thị phần vẫn không được cải thiện. Chẳng những thế, vì tập trung vào thị trường giá rẻ nên doanh thu lại bị giảm tới 68% so với năm ngoái. Theo báo cáo tài chính quý đầu năm nay của Microsoft, bộ phận kinh doanh điện thoại Windows Phone lỗ tới 4 triệu USD, đó là chưa tính đến chi phí nghiên cứu phát triển (R&D) và tiếp thị.
Thực tế là Windows Phone luôn bị lép vế trước iOS và Android vì kho ứng dụng vừa kém cả về số lượng lẫn chất lượng so với các nền tảng đối thủ. Nadella mới đây đã phải thừa nhận rằng Windows Phone không có những thiết bị “đỉnh” để hấp dẫn người tiêu dùng và các nhà phát triển.
Trong thư mới gửi nhân viên hồi đầu tháng 7, Nadella đã cảnh báo Microsoft đang đứng trước những “lựa chọn khó khăn” với những lĩnh vực mà công ty đang thất bại. Ông cho biết, Microsoft sẽ không cố phát triển mảng kinh doanh điện thoại độc lập nữa và tập trung vào việc mở rộng hệ sinh thái Windows. “Chúng ta sẽ mang tới cho khách hàng doanh nghiệp những trải nghiệm tốt nhất về quản trị, bảo mật và năng suất như họ mong đợi; người tiêu dùng điện thoại giá rẻ những dịch vụ liên lạc họ cần; và người hâm mộ Windows những thiết bị hàng đầu mà họ sẽ yêu thích”, Nadella viết trong thư.
Như vậy, có thể hiểu điện thoại sẽ không còn là ưu tiên trong chiến lược kinh doanh của Microsoft nữa. Công ty sẽ vẫn sản xuất smartphone nhưng thu hẹp danh mục và nhắm vào những mục tiêu cụ thể. Smartphone sẽ có vai trò như dòng máy tính bảng Surface, chủ yếu để thể hiện ưu thế của nền tảng Windows.
Trong chiến lược mới, Microsoft đang xây dựng nhiều thứ mà mọi người muốn chứ không chỉ lo rào chắn và thu tiền từ Windows của mình như trước đây. Dưới triều đại của CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft đã và đang nỗ lực đưa ứng dụng của mình đi khắp nơi. Microsoft Outlook cho iOS, Office Mobile cho iOS và Android, trợ lý số Cortana cũng sắp lên hai nền tảng này, thậm chí Office còn được ưu tiên tối ưu hóa trước cho các nền tảng đối thủ iOS và Android. Chiến thuật của Microsoft là cho phép người dùng sử dụng các dịch vụ miễn phí của mình, để rồi hướng họ tới các dịch vụ thuê bao, như Xbox Live để chơi game, Office 365 cho năng suất, Suite Enterprise Mobility cho doanh nghiệp. Nadella cho biết đã có khoảng 150 triệu lượt tải về bộ Office Mobile cho iOS và Android; mỗi tháng có khoảng 50.000 doanh nghiệp vừa và nhỏ đăng ký Office 365 và dịch vụ này được 4/5 doanh nghiệp trong danh sách Fortune 500 sử dụng.
Microsoft đang tập trung vào những nhiệm vụ mới mà Nadella xác định cho công ty, đó là: xây dựng các công cụ giúp mọi người làm việc hiệu quả hơn trên các thiết bị của họ, cho dù thiết bị chạy Windows hay một nền tảng bất kỳ khác. “Trải nghiệm di động” với phần mềm của Microsoft mới quan trọng chứ không phải thiết bị.
Windows 10 thì được thiết kế để tích hợp tất cả các dịch vụ của Microsoft và sẽ nhân rộng ra cho các nền tảng khác. Windows Store trên Windows 10 đã được tổ chức lại, trở thành cửa ngõ dẫn người dùng tới hệ sinh thái của Microsoft. Người khổng lồ phần mềm hứa hẹn người dùng chỉ việc mua ứng dụng một lần từ Windows Store, và chạy trên mọi thiết bị Windows 10, từ máy tính cho đến smartphone, Xbox One, và tới đây còn có cả kính thực tế ảo Hololens. Đó là ưu thế vượt trội của ứng dụng universal, như cách gọi của Microsoft, so với các nền tảng khác.
Windows Phone cũng như phần cứng thiết bị di động không còn là ưu tiên nữa, và Microsoft cuối cùng cũng đã sa thải cựu CEO Nokia Stephen Elop. Đến thời điểm này Windows 10 Mobile chưa chính thức được phát hành, nhưng thất bại của Windows Phone và trước nữa là Windows CE và Windows Mobile trong lĩnh vực di động không rõ đã có thể nghĩ tới câu “quá tam ba bận” hay chưa.
